SPRING 2018 - New Service-Learning Opportunity!!!
SPNS398 is a service-learning course that seeks to attend to one of the greatest challenges of second language education, namely how to help students who are new to immersion programs to succeed when they lack knowledge of the second language (L2). Additionally, UM students of Spanish often lack opportunities to use their L2 skills in meaningful ways outside of their own language classrooms. SPNS398 has been designed to serve the Missoula community by providing after-school L2 practice to children who need it, and to offer UM students of Spanish a unique learning opportunity to learn about language teaching and learning through collaborative experiential learning.

Supervisor Reports and Evaluations
Pablo has a very fun and creative teaching style. His preparation for class is evident in every activity. He has clear examples of difficult concepts that were not given in the PowerPoint. His examples were all in Spanish and were relevant to the presentation and class environment. Pablo is also continuously striving to help students. He checks to make sure they understand the activity and walks around the class to make sure the students are carrying out the activity correctly. Pablo's students respond well to him and actively volunteer for group discussion. (PSU, Spanish Basic Language Program Supervisor 2013)
Pablo's Spanish is terrific and he barely used English in class. Pablo is also friendly to his students and has created a positive environment for learning in the classroom. (PSU, Spanish Basic Language Program Supervisor 2012)
His class was organized and very conducive to learning. Pablo was a caring instructor who created a comfortable didactic environment and his students responded exceptionally to his teaching style. Throughout the class Pablo focused on the target forms as well as on meaning, creating an environment that mimicked real communication. [...] Overall Pablo did an excellent job. He models all activities explicitly for the students and encourages participation and communication in Spanish. He even provided two cultural videos with didactic goals. Pablo is an asset to our program. (PSU, Spanish Basic Language Program Supervisor 2011)
Former undergraduate student and RA's comment
Professor Requena was my instructor for four consecutive semesters at the University of Montana. During that time, I felt that I learned more about the Spanish culture and language than in my previous years combined. In my opinion, Professor Requena is one of the most accessible professors at the University of Montana. he is extremely approachable and willing to explain and expand upon the material until his students fully understand. [...] Professor Requena is a compassionate and considerate person and an excellent educator. It is for these reasons that I believe he is an inspiring professor and an outstanding example of what the University of Montana stands for. I could not have asked for a better person to guide me through my last years in school and my first research job." (AB, Fall 2017)

Pablo Requena. I had taken 2 foreign languages previous to attending Penn State. Pablo was by far the best foreign language instructor I have ever had. Pablo should be teaching all Spanish II courses at Penn State, this guy is the man. Pablo was able to engage the class while moving through the material at a brisk pace and I still feel as if I learned more from the way he taught than from any other single semester of language instruction in my life. Other teachers should sit in the back of his classrooms and take notes on how this guy teaches Spanish. I am hoping very much that Pablo teaches Spanish III in which case when I find out which Spanish III section he is teaching I will switch into the class. (Spring 2013)

Methods of Teaching a Foreign Language was a great class and I learned a lot about the teaching methods and techniques. The contents were very practical for my professional development as a second language teacher. I recommend this class to anyone who is interested in becoming a second language teacher or a language instructor. Throughout the class, I could go over all the necessary theories of teaching language and an effective teaching. Especially, I learned the importance of the 5 Cs (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities) in the language teaching. This is something that I have always interested in implementing to my language teaching class. My teaching of Korean language is mostly form-based lecture. However, I have been ponding of how I can develop my class to more communicative-based lesson. A lot of theories I have heard was somewhat not clear for me to understand without real examples. But this class gave me a chance to work on my own to understand the basic principles of teaching language and practice it with the observation, creating a lesson plan, and a micro-teaching. (Graduate student who took my methods class, Fall 2017)
