I am Associate Professor of Linguistics in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Texas at Austin. My research examines language acquisition to understand how children learn their first, second, and heritage language/s. In particular, I focus on how children learn grammar, with special interest in grammatical choices which express the same meaning (such as isn't ~ ain't in English, or voy a verlo - lo voy a ver, in Spanish). First, I seek to understand how adults use language in a particular community and then I study when and how children learn to use those elements of their native grammar. Most of my research deals with the grammar of Spanish (in monolingual and bilingual language acquisition) and connects the fields of Hispanic linguistics, Sociolinguistic variation, Developmental psychology/linguistics, and Psycholinguistics. I am also interested in Second/foreign language teaching and learning.
